Normally a sugarcane juice retailer (ganna juice wala) sets up shop on the roadside and customers come to him. The Ganna Juicemobile isn’t as common a sight as some of the other machines on this list, but it does get our vote for being the most innovative of the lot.

The Jeeprath can also carry a generator to power all the lights that the wedding lightwalas have to haul on their shoulders. Add to that, some Jeepraths also come with their own speaker holders up front and at the rear, which in turn make them a one stop shop for all your wedding entertainment needs as the ‘baraat’ makes its way to the venue. While a Jeeprath is something you might spot in other corners of the country, nobody makes like the Maharashtrians do! An old jeep is customized with a heavy body kit that is supposed to resemble lavish chariots from an era bygone and you have horse and swan motifs all over them. Having said that, the Zipshaw has given a new purpose to old abandoned Bajaj scooters – as they are the preferred choice to be salvaged and put to use in this manner. It is clear that this contraption has been created out of sheer necessity to make the life of a rickshaw puller easier, however safety is a major concern with the Zipshaw as brake failures are a common trait. The cycle handlebars have been traded in for one off a scooter and underneath the cargo load bed, the motor from a scooter has been mounted along with a drive wheel – which in turn makes this contraption a four wheeler ( with three at the rear and one up front for steering). The Zipshaw doesn’t quite qualify as a three-wheeler however it is based on a simple cargo version of a cycle rickshaw. The Zipshaw (there is no name for this contraption, so I just made one up!).If you are ever in Gujarat, the Chakda is one ride you don’t want to miss – it is an experience in itself and you aren’t going to get it anywhere but there! Those beasts were essentially old Harley-Davidsons that were converted into point to point taxis that could carry 10 people around easily on their grand benches fitted in the cart. While these are a common site in Gujarat, we couldn’t but help draw parallels between the Chakda and the Phat-Phatis that once ruled the streets around Central Delhi. It can either seat up to 15 people (in a cramped manner) or carry a decent load. The cart itself is heavily customized and extremely colourful. While the front end remains intact, the bike is literally cut off post the rider’s seat and a massive cart with two wheels (running ply tyres found on old jeeps / cars) is then welded on, with the chain drive running to the rear axle (following the same science as that of a cycle rickshaw). The donor bike in most cases is a Royal Enfield Bullet however few have experimented with other models as well. Each one of these wheeled-oddities might be designed for a separate purpose, but all of them have one thing in common – cost-effective innovation and in order to celebrate this, we’ve come up with a list of the five best funky machines that you can only find in India. Having travelled the length and breadth of this glorious country, we have encountered some rather odd contraptions on our roads and we figure that these machines can only be found in India. While there are a ton of innovations we could talk about, we are an automotive portal at the end of the day and therefore we shall stick to the topic we know best – vehicles. When it comes to innovation at the grassroot level, India has got to trump the rest of the world in the devices that people have come up with in order to make life easier.
